Veterans
The VA pays for wheelchairs, home changes, vehicles, and care for many veterans. Here are the basics, and where to get more.
Equipment
If you get VA health care, the VA can provide wheelchairs, scooters, prosthetic limbs, and other equipment through its Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service. Ask your VA care team.
Home changes
| Grant | What it is | Most it pays |
|---|---|---|
| Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) | Build or change a home for certain serious service-connected disabilities, such as loss of use of legs. | $126,526 |
| Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) | Changes for certain other service-connected disabilities. | $25,349 |
| Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) | Medically needed changes like ramps and bathroom changes, through VA health care. | $6,800 for service-connected conditions or a rating of 50% or more; $2,000 for others (lifetime) |
SAH and SHA amounts are for the year that began October 1, 2025. The VA usually raises them each October.
Vehicles
Veterans with certain service-connected disabilities can get a one-time automobile allowance of up to $27,908.90 (from October 1, 2026) toward a vehicle, plus an adaptive equipment grant for things like hand controls and lifts. Apply through the VA.
